My HPER responsibilities involve teaching and administration, not research. Nevertheless, I am very interested in the pedagogy of teaching, especially service learning as an adjunct to in-classroom teaching, and in the intersection of nutrition with environmental stewardship.

Along these lines, I am currently involved in research to develop and evaluate effective service learning projects as a pedagogical tool across a range of academic disciplines. Using food as a unifying theme, we will be integrating service learning into classes ranging from nutrition and dietetics to biology, English, fine arts, anthropology, and environmental science and policy. Our goals are to develop initial guidelines for best practices in service learning partnerships in the community and to develop appropriate assessment tools for the evaluation of student learning in these settings.
