Research:

Mary Shaw-Perry

My research activities are focused under the umbrella of minority health and health disparities research that seeks to understand factors that mediate and moderate health behaviors of African American women and their families within the context of ecological systems. Qualitative research methods are utilized to further the understanding of how race and ethnicity, culture, racism, and related determinants of health influence the life-long experiences and health of African American women and their families. Research activities include:

1) Exploratory studies to elucidate barriers to breast health care and early detection screening among African American women

2) A Pilot Study to determine the effectiveness of an early diabetes prevention intervention for African American children

3) An Exploratory study to elucidate perceptions about diabetes among non-diabetic African American women.

4) Development of a framework for guiding the design of a continuum of care for HIV service providers

5) Meeting psychosocial needs of African American women and Latinas living with HIV: Implications for the design of a support group intervention

6) Developing and implementing a statewide (Texas) needs assessment tool (providers and clients) for HIV service providers
