USER is a multidisciplinary approach to underwater research involving six university departments. Charles Beeker has directed numerous research and educational projects throughout the United States and the Caribbean, many of which have studied shipwrecks in an effort to preserve them as underwater museums. He has extensive knowledge and experience in research, education, and interpretation of underwater resources for the public.

New laboratory brings shipwreck relics to Indiana University

Charles Beeker's new laboratory isn't fancy, but it's functional. The 1,000-square-foot facility is abuzz with fans and archaeological activity. Sinks and tubs of water protect such shipwreck finds as 19th-century china from Hong Kong headed for the California gold fields, pig iron ballast, and hand-blown glass ale bottles from Germany. Faculty Spotlight -- Indiana University Bloomington's Underwater Science Program received two $68,700 artifact conservationcontracts from the State of California. The contracts will enable IU to train students in the latest conservation theory and techniques, as applied to 19th century shipwreck artifacts from California state waters.   Full Story
